Real close shave for city politicians

There's nothing like kicking off a fundraiser with a bang.

When organizer Carolyn O'Callaghan began calling the names of those people registered to have their head shaved during the 14th annual Short Cut to the Cure, held this past Saturday at the Drill Hall in Wetaskiwin, she started by bringing to the stage a group of local 'celebrities' – Wetaskiwin Mayor Bill Elliot, and aldermen Joe Branco and Glenn Ruecker.

Branco, sporting dark sunglasses and a decades old hairdo that stretched well below his shoulders, appeared a bit apprehensive as he sat in front of stylist Evelyn Dyck.

And with good reason.

Branco confirmed later that it had been well over 20 years since his last haircut.

Through the years, the rookie alderman would only have about an inch cut off to take care of split ends.

The only 'split enz' Branco will experience in the foreseeable future will be a song on the radio.

Cutting Hair At Home

She sweetly asked why we needed to go to the pet store, and when I said “to buy some dog clippers,” she was even more skeptical since we didn’t own a dog. When I explained that I needed the dog clippers so she could begin cutting my hair at home she broke into laughter – in college my friends and I had always used a set of dog clippers to cut each other’s hair. After her laughter subsided she replied, “You know you can buy PEOPLE clippers at beauty supply stores, right?” She introduced me to Sally’s Beauty Supply , and the home barber shop was born.
